The phrase "Bollywood" refers to films made in India, and much more especially the filmmaking industry located in Mumbai. As a nation, India is outrageous about movies--as amorously as France and also the United States, and maybe moreso. India's nationwide movie has become a distinct expression of Hindi tradition, and also the rise of globalization has allowed those beyond India to see and enjoy their finest work.

India produced its first feature-length movie in 1913: "Raja Harishchandra," that told the story of a king who sacrifices everything he's got for the Hindi gods. It had been a great success, along with other productions soon followed. The turmoil India experienced during the 1930s and '40s--with the Great Depression, World War Ii and the civil war that followed their successful independence from Great Britain--gave Hindu movies of the time an escapist top quality.

Bollywood films tend to emphasize epic qualities, although not quite just how American motion pictures do. Hollywood films in the 21st century place significant amounts of emphasis on action: car chases, explosions, gunfights in between heroes and bad guys. For Bollywood, the spectacle is centered on songs. Song-and-dance figures are quite common in Bollywood movies, using the action going for a back seat to elaborate choreography and also lengthy musical interludes.

Bollywood movies has proven enduringly popular in India, exactly where output and also income often surpasses even that of the usa. It releases more than 800 movies every year.

Censorship, piracy along with other distribution issues remain an issue for Bollywood movies. The Indian industry is governed by a censorship system that somewhat is much harsher than censorship in America or Western Europe. The Central Board of Film Certification, run by the government, dictates the ratings that each film receives and can ban a movie outright if it doesn't approve of its content.
